RED SEA – NILE VALLEY FIELD TRIP

TRIP ITINERARY

Thursday 26th February 2009

Bus will meet our Group at Marwa Hotel at 08:00 AM.

The Bus Trip will follow the Asphaltic Cairo – Suez Road. We shall stop at some Structural as well as stratigraphic locations showing the Stratigraphy of the Cairo – Suez area from the Eocene to the Miocene. Bazalts of the Oligo-Miocene age accompanied the opening of the Gulf of Suez will be discussed.

We shall stop at G. Eweibid (Eocene Rocks) showing an example of Horest Structure surround by younger strata of Miocene age.

* Arrive at Ain Soukhna

Follow the Road south to Wadi Araba, First Stop at Jurassic-Cretaceous exposures at Khashem El Galala, north of Ain Soukhna thermal springs. The Stratigraphy and Structure of the Gulf of Suez in the area will be discussed.

Second Stop will be at St. Anthony's Monastery in Wadi Araba, about 30 km. West of the Gulf of Suez. Crtaceous stratigraphy as well as the ground water resources and water production at the Monastery will be discussed.

Return to the Gulf of Suez southward to Hurghada. Arrival at the Hotel  Check-in and settle into single rooms. Dinner in the Hotel (Open Buffet).

Friday 27th February 2009

Breakfast at 07:00 AM.

Bus Trip will depart from the Hotel. Return to the Gulf of Suez northward to G. Zeit area. We shall visit the oldest site of oil seepages in Egypt as well as discussing the Oil Stratigraphic and Structural Traps in the Gulf.

Return to Hurghada. Free Tour, Dinner in the Arabiya Hotel at 07:00 PM. 

Saturday 28th February 2009

Breakfast at 07:00 AM .

Bus Trip will depart from Hurghada to Qusseir. Following the Qusseir – Nile Valley Road, we shall visit The Ancient Gold mines made by the Pharaos. We shall visit also the old sites of quarrying the sarcophaguses from the Basement rocks and Breccia Verdo.

The Geologic History of the Red Sea and the Basement Rocks will be discussed.

Arrival at Luxor (ISIS Hotel), Check-in and settle into single rooms. Dinner in the Hotel.

Sunday 1st March 2009

Breakfast at 08:00 AM.

We shall visit the western side of the Nile where the Cretaceous –Paleocene sequence is well developed forming the roof of the Valley of the Kings and Queens. Retrurn to the Eastern side of  the Nile to visit the E-Karnak Temple.                                   

Bus will depart 03:00 PM from the Hotel to Luxor Airport to return by plane to Cairo around 19:00 PM.
